People are saying PS3 Linux isn't very useful out of the box. So I won't have to buy one... fortunately for my bank account. Some selected quotes from the docs:
Since the [Blu-ray Disc] drive is basically ATAPI device, Linux can issue ATAPI commands by ioctl. Some of ATAPI commands have been rejected by the hypervisor call because of security issues.

Every other post about PS3 Linux mentions the phrase "media center." I'm not all that enthusiastic about a media center you have to reboot to play movies in.

PS3 has a powerful graphic processing unit with high speed host connection. The GPU is connected to both HDMI and AV multi interface. Although the GPU is connected directly to CBE, no direct access by guest OSes to the GPU is allowed currently.

Hope you weren't planning on making any 3D games without writing a software renderer for the SPEs. I *hope* they couldn't finish writing drivers in time. They're forthcoming, right Sony?

Game PAD
Bluetooth mode is not supported by Linux.

So. I guess it's nice they got Linux pushed out on release day, but it's definitely missing enough stuff to make me think twice about it. Not that I wouldn't mind trying to write an XVideo driver for the Cell. Maybe when I can get one for $99 :P

The PS3 seems to have quite a few problems. Of course some of that might be because it is the console you love to hate.

I hear that 10k 360 core systems will be sold on amazon for $100 come black Friday. I'm rather stuck on whether I should pick one up at that price.

If it runs linux, they can escape a tax in France and Germany on gaming consoles because it's a 'computer'
