So lazy with my LJ updates. Here, have a HexxagonDS screenshot. Now it can render text. It also plays mods using DekuTree's mod library, but that is not as evident in this picture.

You should add midi techno music next. Every good mind teaser / board game deserves midi techno.

dude, it has MOD techno. That means it's like 100x better than games with MIDI techno.

How hard is it to set up homebrew on your DS?

I'd kinda like to do it for ScummVM if nothing else, but among other things, I've heard you run the risk of bricking it.

Of course, I still have my original DS, so I could always just take a chance on that. (When I got my DS Lite, they wouldn't take the original because the SN was scratched so much it was illegible.)

It's not bad, as long as you pick the right hardware. I recommend a NoPass device (I use a PassCard-3) that goes in the DS slot and a CF reader (I use a SuperCard) that goes in the GBA slot. Note that you should get a CF reader, not an SD reader. SD cards are only just beginning to get support in homebrew libraries, and most software can't use them yet.

The only gotcha I've found with the SuperCard is when you're copying a program, you have to use the .ds.gba binary, but rename it to .nds.
