I finally moved my LJ over to S2. I've created some kind of bastard child of Generator and Classic which I call "Practical Rectangles". It lacks the oldschool charm of kvance-*-2001, but it does support tags AND I can finally see my own userpics on my recent entries page.

It's still got some stuff to work out, but I'm happy with what I got so far. I started with Generator, added a color-coded "userpic sidebar" to each box, filled the boxes to their maximum width, fixed Generator's lowercase fetish, added security highlighting, removed the [ navigation brackets ], and restored link underlines.

I still have to fix the navigation, widen the comments display, and I haven't looked at the archives yet.

That was way too much work. I keep forgetting to never do web design, even when I'm just smashing together two existing designs.

I think you should consider making the userpic sidebar a fixed width of 100px (or 100px + margins and borders).

Can one cell of a table be fixed while the rest is flexible? I had trouble with this early on, so I "temporarily" decided to ignore it.

Are you the last one to switch to S2?

Feels that way, but actually not even close...

Looks very snazy and I can't wait for it to be available to the public so I can upgrade ;-).

My only complaint being that colors in the userpic bar for my posts seem to look like someone first puked then pissed all over it heh. Are those automatically assigned right now?

Those are my color codes per user. You pick them when you're adding new friends. When you have a big friends list, it will eventually look like a pile of puke yes, unless you are very good with color choosing :P

I actually rather like my theme, although I did only mess with recent, friends, and calendar. I actually kinda like the default talkread page...

Ooh, I like how you used the user foreground/background colors as borders.

I actually like the default talkread page as well, but I don't like being booted onto someone else's style when I'm commenting on their entries.

And the background/foreground combination shows me who it is and how I know them at a glance (so I know important people). Assuming I keep up with them.

There's a way to override and use your style on everyone's talkread...I think you can even force that you always see the default. I'm not particularly sure how. If you find out, could you let me know?

Look on editinfo.bml about 3/4 of the way down for View comment pages in your journal style?
All this does is append "&style=mine" to links on your friends page. I use it because I like the default talkread page the best. Actually, what I really need is a greasemonkey script that finds links to talkread pages and appends "&style=mine" onto them so that when I go to talkread pages from other peoples' journals I don't have to deal with pages with no LJ links.

What style are you using? On generator, setting style=mine uses generator's talkread page, not the default.

I used to use Generator, but now I use variable flow. I know that when I had generator, there was a way of disabling the styled talkread page, though. I'll take a look and see if I can find it later today.
