I've been running the same copy of Gentoo Linux on this machine since 2002, and the cruft is really starting to pile up. I installed the latest nvidia driver yesterday, and X crashed as long as GLX was enabled. After making sure that there were no version mismatches, I reverted back to the old driver. And X still crashed as long as GLX was enabled.

So, I figure now's as good a time as any to just reblast the whole OS. Now, I don't have my CDROM drives hooked up, so I just built the image on another hard drive. Now, once this backup finishes (gah, how did I make linux take up 14G?), I'll attempt to format the partition and copy my new image... from a chroot on the live system. My experience with linux says that this will work, but I've never done it before :)

Reiserfs on / this time, btw. Tired of having my databases corrupted when mythtv brings the system down.

Gentoo has its share of bugs. Last week, for example, I couldn't upgrade pam because an older ebuild had left libs lying around that broke the install process. Enough of these little things add up.

Coupled with the fact that my system has been through upgrades to 1.2, 1.4, and a bunch of profiles, probably none of them completely (I noticed when I was setting up my new config today that the network config format has completely changed), toss in tons of different compiler versions, including a gcc2 to gcc3 switch, and (more likely than not) some good old fashioned filesystem corruption, and you've got some nice ingredients for bit rot.

Hah. Yeah. My fileserver was the same way until recently. I didn't want to go through the process of running the lib cleaners and just re-installed by installing the OS onto another disk and swapping cables.

The word distfiled echoed around in the back of my mind for a while, until I hit the post button.

Yeah, I clean out distfiles now and again.

I do tend to leave a ton of source code lying around, especially in /tmp. Also in /tmp were about 3 uncompressed versions of the star control 2 data files :P
