Okay, I switched from mozilla to firefox. I need the extensions, and I can't be bothered to learn how to manually install the ones with no mozilla support. I've traded out my ability to search from the location bar (but I have a keyword g search terms like nearby suggested), and the flash plugin. Apparently flash 7 just kills firefox dead. Kinda sucks, and if I hadn't already reconfigured everything, I would have gone back to mozilla and waited for a new, more stable firefox.

Plus, I tried out the cvs code for e17 today. If you already saw the movie, there's nothing new in the code that I could find. It's going to be a worthy successor to DR16, I can tell you that >:D

RE:

Actually, I tend to think that the search function of firefox is pretty slick and you don't really need anything more. I mean, you can just press ctrl-f to have a little non-intrusive bar at the bottom show up for search and just keep on pressing enter for repeated searching... what more do you need right? =)

In terms of the firefox and flash compatibility issue, I ran into a horrible one but it was fixed by just backing up my bookmarks and just deleting all the config files to start from scratch. Now flash 7 works flawlessly with firefox. I am running Debian Sid btw...

Oops

hehe... if I would have only read carefully... I know what you mean by the search by location bar... Yeah... well, the google bar seems to work and like you said, there's g search terms like you said...

I tried backing up my ~/.mozilla directory, so that firefox would create a new one, but it still crashes. Are there any other config files you deleted?

RE:

I tried that too and no, it didn't work for me either.

I wish I could tell ya what other config files I deleted to make it work but the reason why mine works perfectly now is because previously, I experienced a bad crash with XFS and had to reinstall everything except that my homedirs were on a separate hd on a separate partition. So After I re-installed everything I just remounted my homedirs partition. Well, that caused a lot of problems like crashing gnome-panel every 5 mins and flash not working and so on and so forth.

So in response to that, I did a "mkdir backup" in my homedir and then did a "mv .* backup/". Then I proceeded to restart X and reconfigure everything from scratch. So now everything works perfectly but I am not sure if you want to take my route cause if you are like me, there is just a lot of customization I do to my desktop environment and it just takes forever to restore everything to the way I like it.

If you do decide to go my route though, before you actually do it, it may be a good idea to test the hypothesis of config errors by su-ing root and running firefox from there to see hwo flash works. That's the test that convinced me to re-do everything. But then again, a million other annoyances were also the basis of why I re-did everything.

I just watched the E17 movie and upon seeing the startup thingy with the big "e" logo falling into place, I immediately thought "Holy crap, it's MovieOS!".

Sadly, the rest of it was pretty boring.

(then again, I saw this, not this, since e17_movie-00.avi had an endless series of redirects.)

Heh. Have you seen entrance, the login program for e? It's been out a while, and has similar properties.

What's really cool about this e17 stuff is not just all the fade/shadow effects. I compiled and ran this on my 300MHz thinkpad, and they ran at full speed. *That* is what's really cool about it :D So efficient. I have really high hopes for this thing on my real desktop.
