I'm at UMD now (and have been since the weekend). I can't believe how big this room is. I guess I should qualify that, since I've seen people saying this on LJ and posting pictures of this room which could contain 5 smaller rooms. I mean big as in living-on-campus-big. It's so big that I have room for all my stuff, and a guest chair, and still have floor space. Still need to decorate though. I'm seriously considering blik.

I finalized my schedule this morning, after doing the holdfile/waitlist dance for the business school. Here's what I came up with:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
11:00   Marketing Lecture   Marketing Lecture
12:00     Marketing Discussion
12:30   Operating Systems Lecture   Operating Systems Lecture
1:00 Operating Systems Lab Operating Systems Lab
2:00 Planetary Geology Computer Graphics Planetary Geology Computer Graphics Planetary Geology

(From bitman's schedule maker, of course.)

I've had one of each class so far, and here are my initial thoughts:

  • Operating Systems is pretty hardcore. This is the last CS class I need for my degree. After the initial spiel about how all the rumors were true about this being the toughest 400 level class, we went on to talk about all kinds of low level shit. Not bad for the first class :) I am really glad I spent some time doing asm on the C64 last semester, because the experience of working so close to the machine is going to help here.

Our first project involves extending GeekOS, in cyclone. I've been looking for an excuse to play with cyclone, and now I actually *need* it :)

  • Marketing. I need this for my upper-level business concentration (but not minor :P) Could be interesting, who knows. The professor seems to have some experience in the field. No marketing stuff in the first lecture though, just admin stuff. Technically, I'm signed up for the 9:30 lecture, but since attendance is not required (I've never seen this at the business school!), I don't think I'll have a problem getting a seat in the next one ;)

  • Planetary Geology is my first elective this semester. Scott recommended it, and I think he was right. It's geology... IN SPAAAACE! We did a nice overview of some of the stuff in lecture. There were lots of pretty pictures. I'm all about that.

  • Computer Graphics is my second elective this semester. New professor, new course. The prof has some really crazy ideas for our final project (a whole nice area with grass and trees which cars have to drive around, minimizing fuel). It's OpenGL and C++, so no new languages, but this is going to be fun.
