Even though I don't update that much, w3m livejournal.com/update.bml
has become one of the fastest things I can type this summer. I spend a lot of time in w3m. It's almost perfect.
Since my copy of DOOM 3 was taking forever to arrive, I figured I'd just download it. That was easy. Not only do I get a nice ISO image overnight, it's made for burning to DVD, has a user-friendly installer and everything. This is not the warez I grew up with ;) Software companies need to get their act together about delivering games over the internet. I can't believe how convenient and fast that was. (For reference, I searched for 'doom 3 torrent' on the edonkey network, and used bittorrent to download the set of RARs overnight)
Just to review, my windows machine is a 1.33GHz Athlon T-bird with 512M RAM and a 9800 Pro. And DOOM 3 behaved exactly as I expected, since I had Far Cry as an indicator. The game is smooth as butter in high detail while moving around (that's the 9800 pro). Whenever a new sound effect, new room, etc. loads, there is a nice 2-7 second pause (that's the 1.33 athlon).
That didn't stop me from playing all day yesterday. In fact, it made it *easier* since the pauses were like some kind of ESP, slowing down time to prepare a plan whenever an enemy jumped out.
I was very tempted to run down to compusa and buy a new CPU, but there is a limit to how far I'll let you screw me over on the price of computer parts, and compusa was way over that limit. A new Athlon 2800+ barton is on the way from newegg, instead.
