Big changes in the home network. Retired my Pentium-233-in-a-Tangent-386-chassis running OpenBSD, which was the third machine named bender. It did firewalling, port forwarding, NAT, and ran a couple of services. It has been replaced by a Linksys WRT54g running SveaSoft Linux, doing all of the same tasks, except the mail server. Which I realized right when I powered down the old bender. So I dug out a NEC Versa 6060 laptop with a Pentium 166. It is now the fourth machine to bear the name of bender. OpenBSD, sendmail. There were also a 10baseT/coax ethernet hub and a Linksys WAP11 access point that are no longer part of the picture.
The WRT54g is pretty rad. It draws a lot less power and takes up a lot less space than a desktop and 3 peripherals. I can actually ssh in and mess with stuff. Not everything works (the access restriction by time has trouble with a start time at NIGHT, dnsmasq doesn't work, the web interface breaks the list of dhcp host/ip/mac pairs...) Sadly, the SveaSoft guys are being dicks about releasing upgrades for "non-customers," so I'll probably have to fork theirs if they don't release some fixes soon.
Also, since the laptop with the mailserver is wireless, it doesn't even need to be here anymore, so I moved it into the heater room with the Vonage equipment. Oh yeah, and the QoS stuff can't prioritize my VOIP traffic, it can only *deprioritize* other traffic. From what I understand, all of my SveaSoft complaints have already been fixed in prerelease updates which I could pay for, but I really don't want to encourage that kind of behavior.
My first day of work is on Monday. Yaagh. I can never have enough vacation time, can I :/
I beat FarCry tonight. It was basically a fun game <spoilers>
except for the Trigens. Man, I hated fighting the Trigens. They just run straight for you, and if they get close, you die. That's not fun! So, the game gets weaker and weaker as it goes on, until it fizzles out and the credits roll. Zuh? Yeah, I appreciate how you left it open for a sequel where you have to fight even more Trigens, but it's like... you didn't manage to do anything besides save the annoying girl. I dunno, it just wasn't satisfying like winning a game should be.</spoilers>
You know what I wish they'd make another sequel to? Syndicate (Wars). Think of what you could do with today's physics engines driving a fully destructible environment. Ohhh yeah...
Also, to waste more of your precious screen space:
