Friday and Saturday, I spent some time learning how to use Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) in python. Extended the first tutorial to have the ball bounce and roll along the floor, and then added some graphics using OpenGL. Then I noticed that a later tutorial did both of those things. D'oh :P Anyway, I think python, ODE, and pygame+SDL+OpenGL are a really nice combination. Just right for the crazy simulation stuff I want to be doing right now.
I should add that it's not exactly a picnic to do graphics programming when your binary-only nvidia drivers crash the system 1 out of 3 times you run something that uses 3D. I'm LD_PRELOADing Mesa3D right now, but that's not going to cut it for anything serious. I guess I should file a bug report, though I'm not sure how; it's not like I get any useful debug data when it brings the whole system down.
I spent the rest of the weekend playing Frozen Throne. Yeah, that's a pretty accurate assessment. The bonus campaign... oh man, it's so great. They took warcraft and made it into a mini-diablo!
Then, there was Iron Chef America. Since I watch ironcheffan
, my friendslist has been full of entries complaining about it. After all, what else is the internet good for? As for my opinion, I think it was nearly as good as you're going to get a first season of anything. The American chefs were unquestionably qualified for the job, Alton Brown was perfect for the commentator. The chairman played the role very well. I liked the martial arts angle, and... well... he's Catscratch from Wing Commander 4!!! :D The only real problem was the whole bringing in of the Japanese iron chefs. Most of the judges clearly were not used to Japanese cuisine, so it just didn't work. If they end up renewing this for more seasons, they should probably stick to cuisines that the judges are going to know how to judge, or bring in some Japanese judges.
It seems like there is startlingly little schoolwork left, considering that I have a little under 3 weeks of classes remaining. I can only assume that this is some kind of trap.
