Played a little Call of Duty today. The graphics are good, the sounds are great, they did a nice job putting together an atmosphere so you feel like you're inside the game. However, it's still just another first person shooter, without anything new to offer (from what I've seen of the first American and British campaigns).

Current Mood desperately waiting for a new genre

I think the gaming industry could use a resurgence of the old Sierra/LucasArts type adventure games. Only without of the "instant death" syndrome that plagued a lot of Sierra games. (Ever play Space Quest I and get almost to the end, only to have an alien larvae burst through your chest because you kissed some alien woman at the beginning of the game? ARRRGGGHH)

Sierra> Now, wasn't that FUN?!

Lucasarts> Sweet, we can make a selling point of our games "Not as shitty as Sierra's"

I looooved the rubber tree in Monkey Island 1

I think it was in 4 too.

Hey, I *liked* Sierra's old games.

Well, some of them.

Quest For Glory, mostly.

I would love to see the return of adventure games. And I would wonder how they'd look. Old style with hand-drawn/CG backgrounds and animated characters? Click to move? New style with all 3D, and "modern" controls? Third person, first person? How about my beloved action-object interface? How to construct "USE JOJO WITH PUMP" if you're playing on an XBOX? I seem to recall that in one of the Windows King's Quest games, you would do everything with 1 big, dumb mouse click.

But yeah, I definitely prefer the no instant death thing. Every Space Quest game I've played was a source of endless frustration :D

King's Quest VII was the one that was a single mouse click. Incredibly stupid. (King's Quest VIII was essentially a 3D Diablo.) I think my favorite interface was the combined text/mouse input in QFG2 (I don't think any other Sierra games used that particular version of SCI). But the mouse interface where you could select SEE, TALK, etc. wasn't bad.

More annoying adventure game series:
Future War and James Bond, or Space Quest?

have you looked into TotalWar?

It comes highly recommended to me. Though I haven't been able to get myself a copy.

I haven't seen it before. Commanding 10000 troops sounds good though!
