Yet another half baked idea: place mic near speakers, UNROUTE MIC FROM SPEAKERS, start recording from the mic, and playing beeps to calibrate the delay. The player starts playing an {mp3,ogg,flac,format.of.the.day}, and our now properly synched mic listens and calculates the difference. If it's past some threshold, software volume goes up (or big robot claw turns volume dial)

The idea is to automatically drown out anything obscuring our sound. Though I'm not exactly sure about going back down once the other noise source stops. Or if the idea would even work. And I'm certainly not going to program it now.
