This VFD thing has not become any less annoying. I have it! It works! But... my order was screwed up and I got the wrong accessories. Instead of a 4-line mounting bracket and internal USB cable, I got a 2-line mounting bracket and an external USB cable.
I've called up Matrix Orbital but, as I expected, nobody was manning the phones. Perhaps they'll return my voicemail next month.
drivers initialize the USB-serial converter when I force the vendor:product ID, but they fail to open the device when
starts. The chip is detected correctly as an FT232RL, but perhaps the support for these is not so solid. Luckily, I am not totally inexperienced with writing linux USB drivers
. But still... disappointed.Update:
I got a call back! They're going to ship out the extra accessories, and I don't have to ship these ones back. Now I'm satisfied :)
