Weekend well spent: I made a title screen (title screens?) for HexxagonDS.
The top screen (sub screen) uses a text background for the tiles and a 16 bit bitmap background for the logo and copyright. Both backgrounds use the same VRAM bank! By scrolling the bitmap down, there are no visible artifacts from doing this.
The bottom screen (main screen) is like the top screen, except there is an additional 3D layer for the rotating gem. Unlike the top screen, everything gets its own VRAM bank.
The tile backgrounds scroll using the hardware, and the fade into darkness is done with a cool raster effect. Hardware fade to black is enabled, and using a DMA channel for each screen, the fade amount is changed for each scanline.
