Last weekend I figured out what my first DS project should be. I wanted to do something fairly simple that would give me a tour of all of the systems: both processors, both screens, the touchpad, 2D, 3D, sound, and networking. Now I'm not sure what dredged up this old memory, but an old DOS game called Hexxagon fit the bill perfectly.

Since then, the project just keeps hurtling forwards. I was writing to multiple hardware surfaces yesterday, and made a clickable board with a starfield in the background. And today I added another 3D layer on top of that, with some basic lighting and material properties. I wrote a quick mesh "exporter" for blender that just writes out C source code with OpenGL commands in it.

Now I.. kind of have a lot of Hexxagon pieces. I'm really terrifically excited.

Ohh man, Hexxagon. I used to play that, back before time began or so.

It looks pretty spiffy though I've never seen the original, so I have no idea how you play. I'm thinking that the jolly rancher in the middle needs to change color while theres some kicking midi techno going on, the kind that comes with the very best of software key generators. ;-)

It's red jolly ranchers vs. white jawbreakers :P You should be able to download it from the link (works perfectly in dosbox) and there's a flash or java version on the web as well.
