My DS Lite arrived yesterday! I've been playing whenever I had the chance ever since. I like the design, I like the screens, I even like the little OS that boots up before you put a game in. Though it's too bad they didn't integrate more PDA features into it. How great would it be to sync your calendar over wifi?
I bought two games for the occasion: New Super Mario Bros and Metroid Prime Hunters. Now I've played some Mario games a few times at friends' houses when I was a kid, but I'm surprised at how many of my memories are similar to this game. Not everything though (Mario can walljump?!). It's fun and challenging and pretty. The Metroid game is pretty similar to the Gamecube variety, which I loved. I.. guess I've become used to the controls. Having tried to play quake using a trackpad, I didn't have high hopes, but they do okay. My left hand has to hold the DS up, press the side trigger, and use the d-pad. It gets tiring, so I need frequent breaks. Good thing there's a sleep mode.
Metroid also has internet multiplayer, which was neat. No problems getting connected to my home wireless B network. The automatic matching was questionable. It couldn't find anyone from my local area. Worldwide, it found some... players. One was a total noob who didn't get any frags. I got like 3. And the other two guys looked like they had been playing since the game was released and pwned me and the cannon fodder player. Besides that slight mismatch, it was responsive and amusing... if only as complex as a Quake 2 deathmatch.
Phoenix Wright is definitely on my list of games to get... and is the only member of that list so far. Give me time :P
My homebrew stuff shipped from China on Wednesday, arrived in Alaska today, and begins its long
eastward journey tomorrow. I can't wait!
Oh, I almost forgot to mention the sound! The sound is a little weird. The little speakers can't do low frequencies, so bass tracks usually go unheard. With headphones on, the bass is loud and clear but the low low sample rate is painfully obvious. I went back to the built-in speakers.
