I'd like to play with BREW, which is the SDK for my new mobile phone. It seems very difficult to get started, though. The "free BREW SDK" on their website is some kind of windows executable, which it won't let me touch because of browser detection, I guess. Elsewhere, they have a link to their GNU toolchain stuff, which sounds like it would work. Except it has this icon of an open lock next to it. Apparently the opened lock means "LOCKED" because I can't get access to whatever GNU stuff they have. I guess, from poking around their site, that you have to buy a verisign cert before you can download anything? That's a pretty steep barrier to development, isn't it? I haven't even got to the part where I think you can't even run anything on the phone without paying thousands to qualcomm for "testing purposes". So I guess they've guaranteed themselves a mediocre software library. You sure don't have to give Palm any money for the privelage of writing software for them...

I guess you missed my own rant about this a few months back.

FWIW, ISTR hearing somewhere that there will be a JRE that runs inside BREW, but I think it uses a different version of BREW than Verizon's phones have. And given the carrier-centric nature of BREW, it would not surprise me if a) the JRE is only available if your carrier wants it to be available, and b) you had to "buy" applets in a way similar to how BREW works.

I've yet to get a cellphone still, but as much as I'd like to develop software for it when I get one, I think I may end up going with Verizon anyway; they seem to cover pretty much anywhere I'd want to go inside the US, and the "free" Express Network ("free" as in "billed like a voice call") access seems pretty sweet.

I remembered someone had written something about BREW, but the details escaped me. Thanks for the link.

I wouldn't mind using the AppLoader and resigning every 3 months (I already have the link cable), if only I could get my hands on their gcc support stuff!

Please note that I was basically talking out of my ass when I wrote that, having no actual experience with BREW or trying to acquire the BREW SDK. I did read a lot about it, but as far as actual first-hand experience with how the whole system actually works, I have none.

So there is a very good chance that I was wrong. :P

You might check out this forum for VZW users, but I don't know how much they'd know about software development.

Ah. There didn't seem to be anything good on that forum. So, I posted to the official qualcomm BREW forum instead. Maybe I'll get some answers from them...
