According to this page, the broken pin on my disk drive is DMARQ (DMA Request), which signals when a DMA transfer wants to take place. This probably explains why I have to press down on the IDE cable to get any data out of the drive.

I wonder if it would work if I put the drive in PIO mode instead...

I'm still not touching the machine until my new parts arrive.
