MOD of the minute: Zodiak - Respirator

Also, in case anyone is interested, I've attached the latest incarnation of my uber-workstation. Dual AMD 1800s, 200GB IDE storage, 18GB SCSI, 512MB RAM. Costs $1700, so I dunno about actually /buying/ this. Still uses Tyan Thunder K7, so if you ditch the scsi, it'd save hundreds.

The stuff that's for $0 is built-in or I already have.

G450 because it's not for games, and I already have it.
SBLive because it has the best linux support.

I'm pretty happy with my Abit K7-RAID, and it's significantly lower than that Tyan board. But that's just me.

It's significantly lower because it's not dual-processor and has no onboard SCSI or network ;)

I'm using an Abit KT7A-RAID on my desktop machine right now, and I'm fairly happy with it too.

Re:

True. Personally, though, I dislike onboard NICs; they make installing your own a bitch. (My old Digital PII-266 had an onboard 10Mbps NIC; I had to uninstall the drivers and force the OS to not see it in order to to get my 100Mbps NIC to work.) As for not being SCSI or dual-processor, I didn't really want to shell out the money for a SCSI drive or a second Athlon 1.33Ghz anyway (I bought it right as AMD was released the 1.4's, about a year ago; so the 1.33 was somewhat more expensive than the price you listed for an Athlon MP 1800).

Ditch the SCSI.

Buy a Tyan Tiger MPX. The MPX chipset is not some 'MP lite' chipset, so I don't know why you abhor it. It is better than the MP chipset. Tiger MPX has a built-in 3C905. Get Tyan model S2466N-4M, it has fixed USB. The only real problem with the MPX is you must use 66mhz PCI cards in the 64bit/66mhz PCI slots. (Or slow everything down to MP-chipset speed).

Now, if you want SERIOUS hard drive performance, put a 66mhz ATA RAID card (like the Promise Fasttrak 100 TX2, $100) into your 66mhz slot, and do a 0/1 RAID with 4 nice 7200RPM drives, like what md is doing. This will give pretty amazing performance.

Use Athlon XP's. Not more than 1800+, because sometime after that they changed them to disable MP. This is your call, I guess. Check the various hardware forums, ask about it.

Oh, and of course, if you can, wait for Opteron.

Though affordable 2-cpu ClawHammer boards are still nearly a year away. 9 months on the inside.

I dunno, I only really need good disk performance for the OS. I think I'd end up spending more with RAID and MPX. Also, there was not one positive comment about that promise fasttrak controller on LhD.
