Spore! I started playing Friday night, hell-bent on destroying my enemy's homeworld, and then it was Saturday morning. Few games are so engrossing and addictive. The beginning stages, cell and animal, are lots of fun; the middle stages, tribal and civilization, are empty shells of games. But the space stage is what makes it great. If it had characters instead of procedurally generated aliens, it could rival Star Control 2. But that's not what Spore is about. Making creatures, structures, and vehicles; and building a huge empire: massively appealing. The automatic downloading of your friends' creations is a nice touch. I've already run across one of wikle's species (the Time Lord empire) and started building his entertainment structures (the BBC) on my colonies.

No Spore today... yet. Today was my nephew Joshua's first birthday. A few weeks ago he was taking some tentative steps, but now he's tearing around the house! It was great to see him today, and I also met a handful of Ashlyn's family that I haven't seen yet.

I just got to space phase myself. I've enjoyed everything except the tribal phase which I got pretty frustrated with, actually. City was pretty fun, I thought, even if it was pretty light. So far, space is shaping up to be really cool too, but I've only been in space for two hours or so.

I think being a big Civ 3 fan colored my perception of the civilization stage. I really wanted more depth. Perhaps X3 fans feel the same way about the space stage.

I wouldn't want to play a whole civ game there. I think the extremely simple city building was actually well done. The interaction via vehicles could have used more thought, though. Each city has three separate life bars, and you get money for depleting one of them? And, your religious vehicles blow up if they are unsuccessful?

My religious civ fared so poorly that I abandoned them and made a new, military one. It's possible that I completely missed the point of this stage.
